Protein Smoothie for Midlife Mornings
I used to hate the idea of drinking my meals. Something about it felt… unsatisfying. I liked chewing. Crunching. Sitting down to a “real” breakfast.
But when you’re navigating hormone shifts due to menopause, ADHD, brain fog, and a body that needs a little more support—it gets harder to eat everything your body needs in one sitting. That’s when protein smoothies became not just convenient, but necessary.

Why This Smoothie Recipe is My Go-to
This recipe is adapted from the guidance of Dr. Mary Claire Haver, an OB/GYN and leading voice in women’s midlife health. She recommends a daily protein-rich, fiber-filled smoothie to support hormonal balance, reduce inflammation, and stabilize blood sugar—key goals for anyone navigating perimenopause or menopause.
This is the protein smoothie I come back to again and again. It checks all the boxes: protein, fiber, healthy fats, antioxidants, greens, gut health, blood sugar support, and just enough sweetness to feel like a treat.
Chocolate Protein Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients:
2 scoops (50g) Orgain Organic Protein Powder
½ cup frozen strawberries
¼ cup frozen blueberries
½ cup frozen spinach
¼ cup pasteurized egg whites
¼ cup Owyn Chocolate Protein Drink
1 tsp nut butter
¾ cup Fage Greek Yogurt (2%)
1 tbsp ground flax seed
1 tbsp ground chia seeds
Scoop of fiber powder
Scoop of magnesium powder
Scoop of greens powder
Water or ice as needed for blending
Why These Ingredients Work
Each ingredient is intentionally chosen to support midlife wellness: from balancing blood sugar and hormones to boosting focus and supporting digestion. Together, they create a nourishing, energizing start to the day that supports my long-term health goals.
Orgain Organic Protein Powder (2 scoops/50g)
Clean, plant-based protein helps support lean muscle mass, repair tissues, and keep blood sugar stable. It’s especially helpful for women 40+ to combat natural muscle loss.
Frozen Strawberries & Blueberries (1/2 c. + 1/4 c.)
Berries are antioxidant powerhouses. They help fight inflammation, support heart health, and may aid in balancing blood sugar. Plus, they give the smoothie a delicious, slightly tart flavor.
Frozen Spinach (½ c.)
A sneaky way to get in greens. Spinach is high in iron, magnesium, and folate—important for energy and hormone support. It blends easily and you won’t even taste it.
Pasteurized Egg Whites (¼ c.)
A low-calorie, high-protein addition that boosts satiety and amino acid balance. Pasteurized means they’re safe to drink raw. Great for adding extra protein without added flavor.
Owyn Chocolate Protein Drink (¼ c.)
This gives a chocolatey depth and adds even more protein and micronutrients. It also helps the smoothie taste like dessert in disguise.
Nut Butter (1 tsp)
Just enough for healthy fat and flavor. Fats are essential for hormone production, brain health, and helping your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Almond and peanut butter both work well.
2% Fage Greek Yogurt (¾ c.)
Packed with probiotics, calcium, and protein. The 2% version adds creaminess and a little fat to help with absorption and satisfaction.
Ground Flaxseed (1 tbsp)
Flax is a fiber-rich superfood. It contains lignans, which may support estrogen balance—especially helpful during perimenopause and menopause. Also great for digestion and heart health.
Ground Chia Seeds (1 tbsp)
Chia provides omega-3s, fiber, and plant-based protein. Grinding them improves absorption. They help with satiety and digestive regularity.
Magnesium Powder
Magnesium is a must-have mineral for midlife. It supports muscle recovery, sleep, stress response, and digestion. I add a scoop* of my favorite powder for an extra boost.
*Start with less because some brands have an overpowering taste.
How to Make It
Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender.
Add water and ice as needed (start with ½ cup water and adjust).
Blend until smooth and creamy.
Pour, sip, and enjoy the goodness.
💡 I use a Vitamix blender to make quick work of it. It’s one of the few kitchen gadgets I use every single day.
Prep Tips for Your Protein Smoothie
- Since I drink this smoothie every day, I make things easy on myself by prepping in advance.
I portion the strawberries, blueberries, and spinach into reusable freezer bags—just grab one from the freezer each morning.
I also pre-portion all my powdered ingredients (protein powder, flax, chia, fiber, greens, magnesium) into small jars or reusable containers. These live in my pantry and I pull one out each day.
Then all that’s left to add fresh are the yogurt, egg whites, protein drink, and nut butter.
It’s a small act of planning that removes decision fatigue and makes my morning flow with ease. Plus, it starts my day with a power-punch of 35-40g of protein!
Final Thoughts on Morning Smoothies
This protein smoothie has become more than just a breakfast—it’s become a ritual that helps me feel grounded, focused, and fueled for the day ahead.
Of course, your version of nourishment might look different—and that’s okay. Maybe your ideal morning includes warm toast, a journal session, or something savory and grounding. The beauty of midlife is learning to tune into what your body truly needs.
